Court of Honor - Date: 09/19, Time: 7:15,  Location: Church Sanctuary not usual meeting place.  One of the key aspects of scouting is recognizing the hard work and success of our scouts. The Court of Honor is just that, honoring your scout as he advances on the Trail to Eagle. Come join us for this special night – we have lots of rank advancements and Merit Badges to present! 

Camping - Our Next campout is in support of Webelos Outdoor Weekend (WOW).  On  24-25 September, Troop 909 will be providing instruction to Webelos on fire building and fire safety.  The newly formed Pack 909 will be our guests for dinner on Saturday evening.  The campout will be at Camp James Ray.  This trip will be car camping style with Dutch oven cooking and camp comforts such as coolers and “O’Toole camp chairs”.   More details will follow as the plan is finalized.   This is a great time to support our District and improve the skills of many future scouts. 

Service Hours This Sunday - Scouts, the service hour opportunity we talked about is upon us.  The City of McKinney Fire Department has asked we help with the escort and assist in the reading of the names for the 911 Memorial program at Craig Ranch this Sunday 9-11-2011.  Matt Schmalz, Tanner Hamm, Sean Higgs, Braun Shedd, and Noah Satele have already volunteered, but there is room for more.  We have been asked to be there at 7:00 AM Sunday to help with the readings.  Once the readings are complete we are free to go, but have been offered to stay for the program which starts at 1:00 PM.  Speakers include Police Chief Doug Kowalski, Fire Chief Danny Kistner, Mayor Brian Loughmiller and U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson. The key note speaker will be Corporal Thomas Macri of the McKinney PD. Corporal Macri is a former member of the NYPD and was on duty in New York during the 9-11 attacks. The ceremony also includes a flyover and performances by a choir and orchestra.  You need these services hours for advancement, but more important, it’s an opportunity to give back to your community.  Please be there in full uniform, shirt, pants, socks, and boots.  If you plan on helping those whom have already volunteered, please let me know - ASM Brian Umberger at 

Michal Timbrel Eagle Project – I will be conducting my Eagle Scout Project on the 17th of September from 9am to 4pm, give or take an hour, at Sister Grove Park in Farmersville.  I am looking for as many Scout participants as possible.  For those Scouts who have non-Scouting friends that need service hours for other organizational requirements feel free to bring them along.  The more support we have the less time it will take.   We will be repairing sections of the lake loop trail that have been severely rutted out by use and erosion.  We will also build erosion stops to keep the trails from washing out. Additionally, we will be clearing  Lake Loop Trail of fallen trees, pruning bushes, vines, and limbs. This will encourage people to stay on the trail so that new trails are not being made and Leave No Trace principles can be unknowingly encouraged.   I would like everyone to bring their own tools - shovels, pix axes, work gloves, hatchets, pruning shears, and other cutting and digging tools.  I have several people bringing these items but more is always welcome as it is better to have too many than too few.  Lunch, snacks, water and drinks will be provided.   I will be providing maps and directions at the next Scout meeting.  If you have any questions you can call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx. 

Merit Badges – The Troop calendar has been updated to reflect all known Merit Badge classes at the Heard Museum for 2012.  The Heard is a great place to pick up a MB from time to time outside or normal Troop activities.  In the past a number of our boys have chosen to complete Eagle-required Environmental Science MB at the Heard, but there are some easier ones offered as well.  Some tend to fill up in advance.  All require a registration process, a fee, and a waiver.  Be sure to get a Blue Card signed by a Scoutmaster before attending.  Details at 

Campout Photos – if you took photos on the Arkansas trip and would like to submit them for the Troop’s website please either email your best shots to or bring a CD/flashdrive to an upcoming meeting.

Next Committee Meeting – This Monday 9/12/11.  Also, please welcome the new assistant committee chairs:  Advancement Coordinator - Bonnie O’Toole, Equipment Coordinator - Dwayne Ross, Outdoor Activities Coordinator - Kevin O’Toole, Membership/Training Coordinator - Julie Watkins, Treasurer - Chuck Lehocky.  We also need a volunteer for Secretary and Fundraiser.  For Secretary the most important turnover is around minutes at the Committee Meetings as our current Secretary travels at times.  There is no requirement for the incoming Secretary to take the technology functions at this time.  If you are interested in serving in either of these roles please contact Elliott Bevers at
